Near the lake there is a second consideration underneath. The water table sits high, so the sub-base needs a real drainage path rather than being placed into saturated ground. A slab fighting moisture from below as well as salt from above ages on a much shorter timeline, and it also complicates any coating applied later.

On coatings: they work well on a sound, dry slab and they make salt, oil and winter grime far easier to clean off. They need moisture testing first. A coating applied over concrete still pushing vapour upward lifts from underneath, and no amount of care with the surface preparation prevents that.

Thickness follows use. Four inches over a compacted base handles cars. Six is right where a hoist, a workshop or a heavier vehicle is planned, and joint layout has to suit the size and shape of the bay so the slab cracks where it was told to rather than across the parking area.
