Interior and exterior painting in Hamilton

Lead paint, handled the Ontario way, not the American one
The "pre-1978" cutoff that shows up in most search results is American, from a US ban that has no force in Ontario. Canada's current limit on lead in coatings sold here is 90 mg/kg, a rule about new paint, not about what already sits under an older Hamilton home's finish coats. Ontario instead classifies lead work by expected dust exposure: removing a lead-containing coating with a power tool fitted with effective HEPA dust collection is the lowest exposure category, and the identical tool without that dust collection is two categories worse. We work to the low-exposure method as standard, not as an upsell.
Stipple ceilings and old joint compound
A friable texture coat in an older Hamilton house may be asbestos-containing, and removing more than a square metre of it is treated as higher-hazard work under Ontario's asbestos regulation, with the duty to test resting on the homeowner before any tender is requested. We do not sell whole-ceiling stipple removal as a routine painting add-on in this city; we test first, then plan the work around the result.
Lath and plaster, and Hamilton's designated streets
Provincial guidance names lath and plaster, common throughout Hamilton's pre-1950s housing, as a typical example of the older wall assemblies its suite rules were written around, and it behaves differently under a patch than drywall does. Durand's own heritage inventory shows roughly two-thirds of its addresses built between 1867 and 1929, and Dundas carries its own designated Cross-Melville district, so a heritage check is worth doing before repainting a street-facing exterior in either area.
