Concrete pool decks in Hamilton
A pool deck answers to more approvals here than almost anywhere else we build, and the concrete itself still has to solve the same core problem: the slope has to clear the coping on one side and the house on the other, in the same pour, which is a genuinely harder layout than the single-direction fall a patio needs. We form to the pool's actual coping shape rather than a simple rectangle, and we isolate the deck from the pool shell with an expansion joint right at that coping line, because the shell and the surrounding slab move independently and a tight pour against it tends to surface later as a displaced coping stone or a crack radiating from the pool's edge.
Much of Hamilton sits on clay or soil the Building Code treats as undefined, and the Niagara Escarpment, which splits the lower city from the Mountain, adds its own brow and slope considerations on lots that back onto it. A pool's own excavation disturbs a wide patch of that ground right where the deck ends up, and where the backfill under it wasn't compacted properly, an uneven section settling later is the deck's single most common failure. We reinforce with rebar over that disturbed ground and at any grade transition, fibre through the rest of the field.
Bare feet on a hot, wet surface next to water is a worse combination than anywhere else on a property, so exposed aggregate or a light salt finish is usually the stronger choice for a Hamilton pool deck over stamped concrete, which looks the best of the three in photos and grips the worst once sealed.
