Concrete pool decks in Cambridge
A pool deck has to solve a problem no patio does: the slope needs to clear the coping and clear the house wall at the same time, a genuinely harder layout question than a rectangular patio's single fall. We work that out before forming starts, then isolate the finished deck from the pool shell with an expansion joint at the coping itself, since the two move independently under temperature and, for the pool shell, water and soil pressure the deck never carries, and skipping that joint tends to show up later as a coping stone out of line or a crack running out from the pool's edge.
Cambridge is the one city in our region where a pool excavation is genuinely likely to meet bedrock rather than the sand and gravel found under Kitchener and Waterloo, since most of the city's aquifers sit in rock rather than the moraine. Where the footing bears on that rock directly, the frost-depth question effectively disappears, but where it bears on the overburden above it, ordinary soil-type depths still apply, and depth to bedrock varies enough from yard to yard that it gets confirmed on site rather than assumed from a citywide rule. Where backfill from the pool's own dig wasn't compacted properly, an uneven section settling under the slab later is still the deck's most common failure regardless of what sits below it.
Bare feet on a hot, wet surface next to water is a worse combination than anywhere else on a property, so exposed aggregate or a light salt finish tends to outperform stamped concrete here, the finish that looks the best of the three in photos but grips the worst once sealed and runs hottest in a dark colour.
