Every pool deck we pour has to solve one problem no patio does: one slope has to carry water clear of the coping while a second carries it clear of the house, both worked out around the same pour rather than across a simple rectangle. We handle that at the layout stage, before forming, and we isolate the finished deck from the pool shell with an expansion joint at the coping itself, since the shell and the deck respond differently to temperature and, for the pool, water and soil pressure, and skipping that joint tends to show up later as a coping stone out of line or a crack running from the pool's edge.

Bare feet on a hot, slick surface beside water is a worse combination than anywhere else on a property, which is why we lean toward exposed aggregate or a light salt finish for most Waterloo decks rather than stamped concrete, the finish that looks best in photos but grips the worst once sealed and runs the hottest in a dark colour.
