Concrete pool decks in Fonthill
A pool on the Fonthill Kame is easier to live with and harder to dig, and both halves of that come from the sand and gravel the town sits on.
The digging first. Granular material does not hold a vertical face. A pool excavation in clay can be cut close to the shape of the hole; the same excavation here needs shoring and a wider working area, which means more material moved and replaced for the same finished pool. That is a real cost difference between a Fonthill pool and one twenty minutes north, and it belongs in the conversation early rather than appearing as a variation once the machine is on site.
Then the backfill, which is where the deck's future is decided. The ground packed back around a finished shell consolidates readily under load on this soil unless it is placed and compacted in lifts and given time. Skip that and the backfill settles, the deck poured onto it settles with it, and the resulting cracks are structural rather than cosmetic. The waiting is not padding in the programme. It is the programme.
The living-with-it half is better. Water drains down and away through this ground rather than sitting beneath the slab, so frost-related movement under a Fonthill pool deck is less of a problem than it is on clay. A deck built on a properly compacted base here has a good chance of staying flat for a long time.
Finish is a grip decision at the coping. Broom and exposed aggregate both stay usable wet, and exposed aggregate hides the mineral staining pool chemistry produces over several seasons. Stamped is the best looking of the three and the least forgiving underfoot, so at the coping it wants a slip-resistant sealer.
The enclosure is a separate permit through the Town of Pelham and is enforced on its own terms: self-closing, self-latching gates around a private pool, regardless of the state of the deck. Pelham's permit fees are currently under review, so confirm the figure at application.
