Concrete pool decks in London
The thing that determines how a London pool deck looks in five years happens before any concrete arrives, and it is the backfill.
Excavating a pool in clay produces a large volume of heavy material that then goes back around the finished shell. Clay that has been dug out and replaced does not behave like undisturbed ground. It consolidates under load, and it does so unevenly, because it was placed in lumps rather than in compacted lifts. A deck poured onto that too early settles with it, and the cracks that follow are structural rather than cosmetic. This is the single most common reason a two-season-old pool deck looks a decade old, and it is entirely a sequencing problem rather than a materials one.
So the backfill gets placed and compacted in lifts, and it gets time. That waiting is not padding in the schedule. On clay it is the schedule.
After that the deck is straightforward. Four inches over a properly prepared base is right for foot traffic, which is why pool decks price below driveways. Drainage runs away from the water at about a quarter inch per foot to a discharge point chosen on purpose, and on flat clay ground that choice actually matters, because nothing is going to carry the water away by itself.
Finish is a grip decision at the coping. Broom and exposed aggregate both stay usable wet. Stamped looks best and is the most slippery, so it needs a slip-resistant sealer if it is used at the water's edge. Exposed aggregate also hides the mineral staining pool chemistry produces over several seasons.
Two approvals sit outside the concrete. The enclosure is required and permitted separately: self-closing, self-latching gates around a private pool, enforced on its own terms. And on a valley-adjacent property, and London has more of those than its flat reputation suggests, the excavation can need Upper Thames River Conservation Authority approval under Ontario Regulation 41/24.
Anything that passes through the deck, cabana footings, gas sleeves, lighting conduit, goes in before the pour.
