Cambridge holds the oldest housing stock of the three cities in this region, with close to a quarter of homes built in 1960 or before and nearly half predating 1980, spread across Galt, Preston, and Hespeler, the three communities that merged to form the city. That age profile means original strip hardwood under later carpet or vinyl shows up more often here than in Kitchener or Waterloo, and sanding and refinishing it is frequently the stronger answer, both for cost and for keeping a floor that cannot be bought new.
Flatness is what decides readiness, and it is not the same measurement as level. An older Galt or Hespeler floor can slope gently and still be flat locally; a level floor can still fail a straightedge check. Wide plank and large tile both need a flatter subfloor than their narrower, smaller counterparts, since there is no give in either material to mask an uneven spot underneath.
Acclimatisation is not a countdown of days with boxes sitting in a room. It is the house running at its normal indoor temperature and humidity, wet trades finished and dry, and the flooring reaching a matching moisture content confirmed with a meter rather than a calendar. Several engineered and resilient products need next to no acclimatisation time.
Cambridge has one genuinely local wrinkle: much of the city sits over bedrock aquifers rather than the sand and gravel that supplies Kitchener and Waterloo, which can mean excavations meet rock closer to the surface. That changes footing depth and excavation method on structural work, but it does not change the flooring question. A basement slab with no vapour barrier underneath keeps releasing moisture from the ground regardless of what sits below it, and solid hardwood cups in response. Engineered hardwood, LVP, and tile all tolerate that condition better, and testing the slab first is what actually protects the floor.
