What we build into every concrete steps job
Steps are one of the more exacting things we pour, since rise and run have to stay consistent within a fraction of an inch across every step or they become a tripping hazard rather than a design feature. The photos in this gallery show front entrance steps, porch and landing steps, and grade-change steps in a backyard, each formed and reinforced to stay level through Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles rather than settling unevenly the way older, unreinforced steps often do.
Finishes here include broom finish for slip resistance on the tread surface, exposed aggregate, and stamped or coloured concrete where the steps need to match an existing walkway or patio. Most step projects take 2 to 4 days and are quoted per set of steps rather than by square footage, since the forming work for a set of steps takes about as long whether they are two risers or six. Look at the edge detail on each tread in these photos; a clean, consistent nosing is one of the clearest signs of careful forming work.
