Concrete walkways in Toronto
A Toronto driveway can spend a stretch of deep winter under a plow bank without much foot traffic on it. The front walkway does not get that rest, since it is salted on a routine schedule and carries every trip to the door through the exact weeks freeze-thaw is hardest on concrete, which is why we build every Toronto walkway to the same 32 MPa, air-entrained mix used on any exterior flatwork facing that exposure, not a lighter spec on the theory that a footpath matters less than a driveway.
Jointing follows the walkway's own shape rather than a driveway's. A standard-width path only needs transverse joints across it, spaced roughly two to three times the slab thickness in feet, to control shrinkage cracking, which is why it skips the centreline joint a broader driveway or patio slab needs. We bring in rebar specifically at grade changes or old trench crossings, since a long, narrow run is more likely to cross varied ground than a single compact pad.
Base prep is where a Toronto walkway earns real attention, since much of the older, lower city sits on Glacial Lake Iroquois clay and silt that drains slowly and holds water against a slab graded even slightly wrong. We compact and grade the granular base consistently along the whole run rather than only at the ends, so water sheds to the sides instead of sitting and freezing underneath. Where a walkway crosses the boulevard to meet the public sidewalk, the city treats that stretch differently: it requires a street work permit filed at least eight weeks ahead, done by a city-licensed paving contractor, a real scheduling constraint worth building into the timeline early.
