Toronto's driveway rules split sharply along the seam left by amalgamation. Front-yard and boulevard parking is banned by default city-wide, and in most of the old, pre-1998 downtown and inner-suburb core, the city won't even accept an application to change that. Where a licence is obtainable, mostly in the former Etobicoke, York, North York, and Scarborough municipalities, it comes with a hard 2.2 or 2.6 metre width cap, mandatory permeable paving, and a neighbourhood poll: a 50% petition just to trigger the vote, then a City-run poll needing a 25% response rate and majority support, binding the whole block for three years either way.

Any driveway or walkway work that touches the boulevard, sidewalk, or curb needs its own street work permit, requested at least eight weeks before work starts and carried out by a City-licensed paving contractor, a longer lead time than any other city we serve requires. Toronto also carries the oldest and most vertical housing stock in our service area: well over half of all dwellings predate 1980, and nearly half sit in high-rise buildings with no driveway to speak of, so the ground-related homes where driveway work actually happens are a real minority of the city's total housing.

A driveway sees two things a backyard slab doesn't: constant vehicle weight and de-icing chemical dragged in from the road. That combination is why exterior flatwork carries a stricter concrete spec than an interior floor, air-entrained and lower in water-cementitious ratio, the mechanism that resists freeze-thaw scaling rather than just looking strong at first. We build the base under every Toronto driveway compacted and drained, then place reinforcement at the depth it needs to actually carry load, not laid flat and poured over.

Toronto's own driveway rules are the most locally variable of any city we build in. Ordinary driveway width follows the Zoning By-law's frontage bands, starting at a 2.0 metre minimum and capping small-frontage lots under 6 metres at 2.6, but front-yard and boulevard parking is a separate regime entirely, banned outright across most of the old, pre-1998 downtown core and only obtainable elsewhere through a licence with a mandatory neighbourhood poll attached. Where that licence is available, the pad itself has to be permeable paving, no exception, on top of a 2.2 or 2.6 metre width limit tighter than an ordinary driveway would carry.

Any work reaching past the property line into the boulevard or sidewalk needs its own street work permit, filed at least eight weeks ahead and performed by a City-licensed paving contractor, so scheduling a Toronto driveway starts earlier than it would almost anywhere else we serve. We hold every pour to the same cold-weather rule as the rest of Ontario, keeping fresh concrete above 10 degrees for the first three days once air temperatures fall below 5, and we skip de-icing salt on any new slab through its first winter regardless of the neighbourhood. Can I park in my front yard in Toronto?

By default, no. Front-yard and boulevard parking is prohibited city-wide, and applications aren't even accepted in most of the old, pre-amalgamation downtown core. It's more workable in the former Etobicoke, York, North York, and Scarborough areas, subject to a licence.
