Disposal is billed by weight, not area, so removing an old concrete slab costs meaningfully more than removing asphalt or gravel over the same footprint. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association puts normalweight concrete at 140 to 150 lb per cubic foot, or 2,240 to 2,400 kilograms per cubic metre, which works out to roughly 13 tonnes of material for a 600 square foot slab 4 inches thick. Two things swing this line. Thickness, since an old 6 inch slab is half again the tonnage of a 4 inch one. And reinforcement, since a slab with rebar through it has to be cut and broken into liftable pieces rather than crowded up with a machine.
Excavation depth, and what is under the topsoil
Excavation is priced by volume moved, so depth is the cost, not area. Every driveway has to come down past topsoil and organic material to undisturbed subgrade, and how far down that sits varies lot to lot.

Welded wire mesh is cheaper per square foot than a 10M or 15M rebar grid, in both material and tying labour. The cost that actually matters is placement: steel has to sit up in the slab on chairs, not flat on the base, and chairing a grid takes real time. The mix, and the finish on top of it
Ready-mix is sold by the cubic metre, and the price follows what you specify: strength, aggregate size, air content, slump, admixtures. - A line pump or conveyor has a day rate and a minimum, and on a rear-lane or backyard job it is often the only option.
