Six ways colour gets into concrete
Homeowners ask for "coloured concrete" as if it were one product. It is six, and they differ less in the colours available than in where the colour physically sits. That one fact drives fade, wear, repairability, and cost.

One boundary before you read on: this is colour method, not surface texture. Broom, exposed aggregate, and stamped are compared as finishes in our breakdown of concrete finish types, and most of the colour methods below work on most of those textures.
1. Integral colour: pigment batched through the whole load
Integral colour is pigment, almost always synthetic iron oxide, added at the ready-mix plant so the entire load arrives coloured. The colour is not on the slab, it is the slab.
The pigment is a specified product. ASTM C979/C979M, the standard specification for pigments for integrally coloured concrete, caps the prescribed dosage at 10 per cent of the mass of cement, limits water-soluble matter to 2.0 per cent of the pigment sample, and requires alkali-resistance and light-resistance testing. That light-resistance requirement is why iron oxides dominate the category and why an integrally coloured slab holds its tone for decades.
What integral colour buys you is indifference to wear. A chipped edge, a scaled patch, a saw cut for a service line: all show the same colour as the surface. What it does not buy is a guaranteed uniform tone, because tone is set by finishing and curing, not by the pigment. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association's Concrete in Practice sheet on discoloration is blunt: a higher water-to-cementitious ratio finishes lighter, more finishing produces darker concrete, and uneven curing changes hydration and therefore colour. Adding water to a coloured load at the curb lightens that truck and pushes the mix past the ratio its durability depends on, which is why we do not do it.
The practical failure on a big coloured pour is truck-to-truck variation. NRMCA notes that applying a texture or pattern minimizes the perception of colour variation between successive loads, which is why integral colour is more often paired with a textured finish than a smooth one. On concrete patios in Guelph and other jobs that take a single load it rarely comes up; on a driveway that takes three, plan for it.
2. Dry-shake colour hardener: colour worked into the surface
A dry-shake hardener is a pigmented, cement-based powder broadcast onto the fresh slab after bullfloating and floated in, usually in two passes at the coverage the manufacturer publishes per 100 square feet. It gives more saturated colour than integral pigment at similar cost, because you only colour what you can see, and it densifies the surface it goes into.
The tradeoff is that it is more finishing, and on exterior air-entrained flatwork more finishing is a durability risk rather than a neutral choice. Concrete Ontario's Concrete Care residential flatwork guide states that minimal finishing is recommended to maintain surface durability and that over finishing with hand tools may compromise it. Concrete Alberta's residential flatwork procedures exclude decorative work from their standard guidance outright, noting that finishing procedures for exposed aggregate, coloured, and stamped concrete differ and require their own cautions.
So the question to ask a contractor quoting a colour hardener is who on the crew has done it before on air-entrained exterior concrete. Done well it is excellent. Done by a crew learning on your driveway, the extra floating costs you surface durability in a climate that finds the weakness by March. And because the colour lives only in the worked surface, deep damage exposes grey, and a spot repair means finishing fresh concrete to match a slab that has already weathered.
3. Acid stain: colour formed by a chemical reaction
Acid stain, more accurately reactive stain, is a mildly acidic solution carrying metallic salts. The acid opens the surface so the salts can get in, and the salts react with free lime, the calcium hydroxide left from cement hydration, to form insoluble coloured compounds inside the top layer of paste. The colour becomes part of the concrete's chemistry rather than a layer on it, so there is nothing to peel.
Three consequences, all of which matter outdoors:
- It depends on the slab, not just the product. Two slabs given the same stain take colour differently depending on cement content, how hard the surface was troweled, and how carbonated an older surface has become. The mottled look is not a style choice, it is what the reaction does.
- It is thin. Reactive colour lives in the surface paste, so heavy scaling or grinding takes it off. That is a real consideration on a driveway facing winter salt.
- It has to be neutralized and rinsed properly. Residue left behind interferes with sealer adhesion, and the sealer is what protects the stain.
Acid stain is the main reason a homeowner with a sound but tired slab does not need to replace it. It is also the most weather-bound option here, wanting a clean, dry, above-freezing slab, so in southern Ontario it is a spring-to-fall job. Recolouring existing concrete patios in Niagara Falls is usually a stain conversation rather than a demolition one.
4. Water-based stain and dye: pigment carried into the pores
Water-based stains and dyes skip the reaction. Fine pigment or dye is carried in water or solvent into the surface pores, where it stays mechanically. That makes them more predictable than acid stain, available in colours no reactive stain can produce, and simpler to apply, with no neutralizing step.
The split inside this category is the part that gets missed. Pigmented water-based stains use the same class of inorganic iron oxides that ASTM C979 tests for light resistance, and they hold up outdoors. Dyes use much finer, often organic colourants, which is why dyes are largely an interior product and fade on a south-facing patio. If a quote says "dye" for an exterior slab, ask for the manufacturer's exterior UV rating before you sign. Either way a sealer is required, because pigment sitting in pores rather than bonded into the paste will wash out of an unprotected surface over a few seasons of pressure washing.
5. Tinted and pigmented sealers: colour on top of the concrete
A tinted sealer is a film-forming acrylic with pigment suspended in it. The colour sits entirely above the concrete, a few thousandths of an inch thick. It is the cheapest and fastest way to change how a slab looks and the standard fix for a faded stamped patio whose original colour layer has worn thin.
It is also the only method here with a real renewal obligation. Concrete Ontario recommends routine sealing every one to two years depending on exposure and product type, and a pigmented film on a GTA driveway sits at the short end: tires wear visible lanes into it, and moisture trapped under the film shows up as blush or peeling. This is a different product class from the penetrating sealers used for durability; Concrete Alberta recommends a silane penetrating sealer on residential driveways after at least a month of drying following cure, which protects concrete without adding colour or a film. Use a tinted sealer to renew colour on an existing decorative slab. Treat it as the colour method for a new pour and you have signed up for a repainting cycle instead of a finish.
6. Exposed aggregate: colour from the stone
Wash the surface paste off a fresh slab and the colour you get is the colour of the stone in the mix. No pigment to fade, no film to wear, no reapplication. It is the most permanent colour in this list and the least controllable, because the palette is whatever the local pit supplies unless you pay to bring in select aggregate. What an Ontario winter does to each one
No pigment adds durability. Concrete Ontario's flatwork guide sets the requirement for exterior flatwork exposed to chlorides and freeze-thaw without reinforcement at CSA A23.1 Class C-2: 32 MPa, a maximum water-to-cementitious ratio of 0.45, and 5 to 8 per cent plastic air with 20 mm aggregate. Patios and pool decks that never see de-icing salt fall under Class F-1 in Concrete Ontario's exposure class summary of CSA A23.1:24, at 30 MPa and a 0.50 ratio. Get that wrong and colour is the least of your problems.
Efflorescence is the top cosmetic complaint on coloured slabs. Water moving through the slab carries dissolved calcium hydroxide to the surface, where it meets carbon dioxide in the air and leaves calcium carbonate behind as a whitish haze. NRMCA lists it as one form of discoloration. On grey concrete you would barely register it. On a charcoal or oxblood slab it reads as light patches, and it recurs seasonally until the slab has finished drying out.
Curing consistency shows up as colour. NRMCA warns that polyethylene sheeting touching parts of a slab and not others produces variable hydration and visible colour variation, and recommends an even application of a quality spray-on curing compound instead. Concrete Ontario asks for curing to begin immediately after finishing and continue at least 7 days above 10°C. Coloured concrete does not need different curing, it needs the same curing done more carefully, because it keeps the receipt.
The first winter is the one that matters. Concrete Ontario advises avoiding de-icing chemicals entirely in the first winter and using sand or fine grit for traction. On a coloured slab there is a second reason: salt-driven scaling removes the surface, and on every method above except integral colour and exposed aggregate, the surface is where the colour is.
Repair and patch matching
Most homeowners choose on appearance and never ask how the colour repairs. The honest ranking:
Integral colour repairs best and still not perfectly. A replaced panel can be batched to the same pigment dosage, but new concrete beside weathered concrete will not match on day one, and NRMCA's point about texture masking colour variation applies to a patch as much as to a second truck.
Colour hardener is hardest to patch, because matching means recreating a hand-worked surface layer on fresh concrete beside a surface that has aged.
Acid stain is the most practically repairable, since you can restain, but the reaction depends on the substrate: a patch poured this year has more free lime at the surface than a slab poured in 2010, so identical stain gives different colour. Expect to blend across a joint rather than hide a patch.
Tinted sealer is trivially repairable in the sense that you recoat the whole slab, which is also its main cost.
One caution before anyone reaches for a cleaner: NRMCA notes that chemical methods used to remove discoloration may significantly alter the colour of the concrete surface, and recommends a trial on an inconspicuous area first. On coloured concrete an acid wash meant to clean can strip or shift the colour itself.
Choosing by surface
Driveways. Integral colour or exposed aggregate, and nothing that depends on a film. Tires and plow blades are hard on coatings, and a driveway is the surface most likely to be salted. For concrete driveways in Oakville and similar GTA work, integral colour with a textured finish ages best.
Patios. The widest choice, since a patio sees no vehicles and usually no de-icer. Integral colour for permanence, acid or water-based stain to tie a slab to existing brick or stone. Walkways and steps. These are Class C-2 surfaces because they get salted, so colour that lives only in the surface layer is a shorter-lived choice here than on a patio.
Pool decks. Darker surfaces absorb more heat, so colour choice has a real effect on barefoot temperature, and that plus slip resistance drives the decision more than palette does.

Does coloured concrete fade?
It depends on the method. Integral colour and exposed aggregate do not meaningfully fade, since the colour is the material and pigments sold against ASTM C979 must pass a light-resistance test. Reactive stains hold colour but sit in a thin surface layer that can wear. Dyes and tinted sealers are the two that visibly fade outdoors, dyes because of the colourant chemistry and tinted sealers because the film itself wears away.
Can you colour an existing concrete patio or driveway?
Yes, with stain or a tinted sealer, provided the slab is sound and clean. Integral colour and dry-shake hardener are placement-time methods, so they are only available on a new pour or a resurfacing overlay.
Why does my coloured driveway have white patches?
Almost always efflorescence: dissolved salts carried to the surface by moisture and left as a whitish deposit when the water evaporates. It is cosmetic, more visible on coloured concrete than grey, and usually diminishes over the first couple of seasons as the slab dries. Aggressive acid cleaning is a poor first response, since acids can change the colour of the surface itself.
Do I have to seal coloured concrete, and how often?
Any stained or dyed surface needs a sealer to survive outdoors, and Concrete Ontario recommends routine sealing every one to two years for residential flatwork depending on exposure and product. Integral colour and exposed aggregate do not need sealer to keep their colour, though sealing still reduces staining and salt uptake.
Will a repair ever match the original colour?
Close, not identical, and integral colour comes closest. A textured finish hides variation between a patch and the surrounding slab far better than a smooth one, which is the same reason coloured concrete is usually textured to begin with.
