Three separate temperatures matter, and homeowners usually only think about the first one.

Air temperature during and after placing. Concrete Ontario's technical specification, reproducing CSA A23.1, defines cold weather concreting as any time there is a probability of the air temperature falling below 5 °C within 24 hours of placing, as forecast by the nearest official meteorological office. That is a forecast test, not a thermometer reading when the truck arrives. A 14 °C afternoon with a 3 °C overnight low is a cold weather pour and has to be planned as one. At the other end, hot weather concreting starts at an ambient 27 °C, or a forecast that the temperature will rise above 27 °C during the placing period.

July and August: what hot weather changes

  • Start early. A 7 a.m. pour on a 30 °C day is a different job than a 1 p.m. pour on the same day.
  • Dampen the subgrade, the forms and the reinforcement before the truck arrives, so they do not pull water out of the mix.
  • Put more hands on site than the square footage strictly needs, because finishing time is the constraint.
  • Have curing in place immediately after finishing, plus sunshades, windbreaks, evaporation reducers or a fog spray if wind and low humidity are stacking up.

Cure time, and when you can actually use the driveway

Curing requirements are set by strength and time together, not time alone. CSA A23.1's basic curing regime is three days at 10 °C or more, or as long as it takes to reach 40% of the specified strength. The additional curing regime commonly specified for exterior concrete is seven days total at 10 °C or more, plus the time needed to reach 70% of specified strength.

The practical effect on your calendar is that the same mix takes longer to get there in October than in June, because strength gain slows as temperature drops. A properly protected late-October slab can need noticeably longer before anyone drives on it than the same slab poured in June. Booking season: how the calendar moves your wait and your price

The concrete is only half the schedule. The other half is your municipality, and it is more seasonal than most people expect.

Hamilton is the clearest case. The city builds the boulevard approach itself once the Residential Driveway Access Permit is approved, and that work only runs roughly April through November. Hamilton states plainly that an application received after September 5 gets scheduled for the following year's construction season. Miss that date and the private-property pour can still go ahead, but the city's half waits until spring.

Guelph will not touch a curb over winter at all, and an entrance permit there takes one to three months to work through after approval. A curb fill waits for the next annual tender. Waterloo keeps curb cutting in house, and while its own crew usually books the cut within about two weeks of payment, the city also wants two weeks' notice before an existing entrance is paved over so staff can mark the water shut-off valve.
